Your taskbar is always there, taking up space, breaking your focus, and making your desktop feel cramped.
I used to ignore it too. Then I tried going full screen on a smaller display, and that thin strip at the bottom suddenly felt huge, stealing pixels I actually needed.
So I started digging: is there a clean way to hide it without breaking usability or missing notifications?
Turns out, there is, and it’s easier than most people think.
In this guide, you’ll learn 3 simple ways to hide the Windows taskbar in seconds, so you can free up space, stay focused, and keep your desktop clean without losing control.
Why Some Users Might Want To Hide The Taskbar?
The taskbar is a valuable feature of Windows’s GUI, providing quick access to your apps, the Start menu, and the Windows control center, which includes many system functions such as adjusting the sound volume and switching the typing language.
Regardless of these benefits, many users find the taskbar distracting since it takes up valuable screen space, especially if they prefer a clean, minimalistic desktop look and feel.
Fortunately, Windows 11 provides some options in the Settings app to auto-hide the taskbar. Moreover, there are third-party tools that give you even more flexibility compared to the options we mentioned earlier.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through several methods to hide the Windows 11 taskbar if you want to give your PC a minimalist look.
Understanding the Taskbar in Windows 11
By default, the taskbar sits at the bottom of the Windows 11 GUI, designed to be the central hub for navigation and quick access. It groups your Start menu, pinned apps, search, widgets, and system tray icons in one place.
Unlike the previous version of Windows, which is Windows 10, Microsoft has given Windows 11 the same aesthetics and look as macOS, and it is inspired by it. The taskbar in Windows 11 is centered by default, mimicking how Mac OS looks and feels.
Microsoft has simplified the customization options in Windows 11 compared to Windows 10, which means you can still move icons, change alignment, and adjust taskbar behaviors. However, you can’t drag them to the top or sides of the screen, unlike in Windows 10, without using workarounds.
How to Hide Windows Taskbar?
Now that you know what the taskbar is and what it does, and why it matters, it’s time to make it disappear to clear some space on your screen and make your workspace minimalistic.
Method 1: Auto-Hide Your Taskbar via The Settings App
One of the easiest ways to auto-hide your taskbar until you hover over it in Windows 11 is by changing some Taskbar personalization options in Settings.
What I mean by hovering over it is that you can make the Taskbar reappear only when you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen, and it disappears when it’s not in use to clear space on your workspace.
To auto-hide your Taskbar. First, you must open Taskbar settings within the Settings app, and to do that, you must right-click the taskbar with your mouse and select Taskbar settings.

Once the Taskbar settings open, you will see an option called “Taskbar behaviors”.

Left-click it with your mouse to expand it. Next, check the box that says “Automatically hide the taskbar” to enable Auto-Hide.

The only thing that is left is to test the new feature. When you enable it, you will see that the Tasbar hides automatically.
Hovering near the bottom of the screen will make it pop back up, while moving your mouse cursor away from the taskbar makes it disappear.
It’s a simple method that doesn’t require any third-party software, using only the built-in settings within Windows 11.
Method 2: Hide Your Taskbar With a Keyboard Shortcut
While Windows 11 doesn’t have a direct keyboard shortcut to hide the taskbar completely, you can still use a simple shortcut and trick to temporarily hide it when needed.
F11 (Full-Screen Mode)
The first shortcut that we will talk about is F11, which makes your favorite apps go straight to full-screen mode. This trick hides your Taskbar temporarily, giving you maximum screen space for your work.
Method 3: Hide Your Taskbar With a Third-Party Tool
Option 1: Using Taskbar Eliminator (Pre-defined Hotkey)
What is Taskbar Eliminator?
Taskbar Eliminator is a lightweight utility that lets you hide the Windows 11 taskbar with a pre-programmed hotkey, “Alt + T”.
It’s especially handy if you want to hide and show your Taskbar quickly without opening the Settings app every time to tweak the option we discussed in Method 1.
By default, the toggle hotkey is Alt + T, which makes the taskbar vanish until you hover over it. Please note that pressing the same hotkey will bring it back, while “Ctrl + Alt + T” will open the utility window.
How to Use Taskbar Eliminator to Hide Windows 11 Taskbar?
To use Taskbar Eliminator, you must download it from its official website and use WinRAR or any archiving tool to extract the software. Launch the software and see the magic happen.

This utility will typically hide in your system tray, and you can press “Ctrl + Alt + T” to bring it up. Press Alt + T to hide the taskbar. Press Alt + T again to show it.
You can configure “Taskbar Eliminator” to start with Windows, so the hotkey will always be available to use. And to do that, you have to press “Ctrl + Alt + T” to bring the software window and press “Start with Windows”.
Option 2: Using AutoHotkey (Custom Hotkey)
What is AutoHotkey?
AutoHotkey (AHK) is the ultimate automation scripting language for Windows. It is considered a powerful scripting language for automating the Windows GUI and general scripting.
It allows users to create their own scripts to automate repetitive tasks, remapping keys, saving time, and creating custom keyboard shortcuts.
How to Use AutoHotkey to Hide Windows 11 Taskbar?
To hide your Taskbar using a custom keystroke. First, visit the official AutoHotkey website and download the software exe installer.

Click on it to install it. You can find the software in your downloads folder.

Once you have it on your system, open it, and you will see a window like this:

Click on “New Script”, you can name it whatever you like, and click on “Edit”. I named my script “hideYourTaskbar”.

If this is the first time working with the AutoHotkey software, a new window will pop up telling you which software you would prefer to edit your script.
Select “Notepad” for now. Don’t worry, you can change it later in the software settings.
Once Notepad appears, copy the script that I will write below and change the hotkey to whatever you like.

It’s pre-defined at the “T” key. To change it, simply remove the first character, which is “t,” to whatever you like.
t:: {
if '' = h := AUTOHIDETaskbar()
return
DetectHiddenWindows(true)
for , w in ['Shell_TrayWnd', 'Shell_SecondaryTrayWnd'] {
if !w := WinExist('ahk_class' w)
continue
loop h ? 4 : 1
Win%h ? 'Hide' : 'Show'%(w)
}
}
AUTOHIDETaskbar(action := -1) {
static ABM_GETSTATE := 0x00000004
static ABM_SETSTATE := 0x0000000A
static ABS_AUTOHIDE := 0x1
static ABS_ALWAYSONTOP := 0x2
APPBARDATA := Buffer(size := 2 * A_PtrSize + 2 * 4 + 16 + A_PtrSize, 0)
NumPut("UInt", size, APPBARDATA)
;NumPut('Ptr', WinExist('ahk_classShell_TrayWnd'), APPBARDATA, A_PtrSize)
STATE := DllCall("Shell32\SHAppBarMessage", "UInt", ABM_GETSTATE, "Ptr", APPBARDATA)
if action = AUTOHIDESTATE := STATE & ABS_AUTOHIDE && 1
return
NumPut('UInt', STATE ^ ABS_AUTOHIDE, APPBARDATA, size - A_PtrSize)
DllCall("Shell32\SHAppBarMessage", "UInt", ABM_SETSTATE, "Ptr", APPBARDATA)
return !AUTOHIDESTATE
}Now, save the script with “Ctrl + S” and double-click it to run it. You will see the running script in your system tray.
Press your pre-defined key, “t” in my case, to hide your Taskbar and press it again to show it up.
